In 1880 Vermont psychiatrists experimented with drowning as a therapeutic technique for the mentally ill, thinking that the shock of the experience might set patients right. An early patient was Richard Whitney who, after being successfully drowned and revived, exclaimed “You cannot drown love!” Doctors considered the experiment a failure. Whitney subsequently overdosed on opium. |
