about the exhibit

Narrating with textures from architecture and nature, these contemporary artists explore themes of abandonment. the work of Joyce Fillip, Rachel Herrick, and Rudy Rudisill investigate the cultural landscapes of traditional and contemporary perspectives. This exhibition seeks to bring to light not only places of physical abandonment, but also to places of forsaken emotions.

rachel herrick exhibition statement

Rachel Herrick explores time and culture by layering old and new media to create scenes that are uniquely contemporary. Her paintings of dilapidated buildings are unblinking views of old ways of life melding with or giving way to present day needs.

Herrick’s artistic technique echoes the sedimentation and erosion seen in her buildings. The works in FMoA’s Forsaken exhibit are painted on old grain, seed, and tobacco fertilizer sacks from North Carolina-based companies, including the Eastern Guano Manufacturing Company from Fayetteville . These sacks are mounted on board or stretched, providing unusual substrates on which Herrick combines traditional techniques, such as painting and drawing, with newer ones like collage, photography, digital manipulation, and polymer emulsion transfers.
